Australia’s coastline was first mapped in 1802 by both French and English surveyors. Matthew Flinders maps were so accurate that they remained in use until the 1940′s when their accuracy was largely confirmed by aerial photography.

A look at Australian State Borders are mostly straight lines and generally East West or North South. However New South Wales borders follow rivers. On the south the greater length of the border with Victoria follows the Murray River. The eastern end of the northern border with Queensland also follows the ‘border’ rivers.

State borders were generally decided and mapped in the 1800′s and were generally very accurate with one exception. A look at an Australian map will show the North South border between New South Wales and South Australia at its southern end meets the Murray River. But south from there South Australian Victorian border is displaced by approximately three kilometres to the west by a surveying error!
