To curtail dowry, the Indian Parliament passed the legislation named THE DOWRY PROHIBITION ACT, 1961, (Act No. 28 of 1961) on 20th May 1961 applicable to the whole of India except Jammu and Kashmir penalizing people to seek any property or valuable security during the marriage or after marriage.
The valuable things refer to the items mentioned in Sec 30 of Indian Penal Code (45 of 1860).
