As defined in the dictionary parallax is the effect whereby the position or direction of an object appears to differ when viewed from different positions, e.g. through the viewfinder and the lens of a camera.

Thus, the star when measured from earth through parallax appears to be at a different position.

The astronomers can use this effect of parallax to measure the distance of the nearby stars.
