The Pallavas ruled in Mysore, Karnataka, and Southern India (incorporating the modern regions of Andhra Pradesh, northern Tamil Nadu, and parts of southern Karnataka). Later on, they conquered vast areas of the sub-continent, expanding across much of it into what is now Afghanistan during the reigns of Dharmapala and Devapala.

About the Pallavas :

  • Pallavas established their own kingdom on the ruins of the eastern part of the kingdom of the Satavahana. It is said initially they were officials under the Satavahana rulers. They made their capital at Kanchi which over the period of time became popular for its magnificent temples.
  • They became a centre for Vedic learning. They were very much involved in wars with the Chalukya dynasty. Their kingdom ruled most of the parts of the south. Simha Vishnu is considered the founder of this very dynasty.
  • The great work of Mahabalipuram was his piece of initiation, which was completed by Narasimhavarman his son. The later was credited with great intelligence and bravery for he succeeded in gaining back his territories from the Chalukya king Pulakesi-II. They were rich in art culture and literature.
