The SI unit of pressure is the pascal (Pa). One pascal is just one newton per square metre. So, standard atmospheric pressure  at sea level is 1.01325 bar. The only convenient thing about the bar is that one bar is roughly equal to normal atmospheric pressure and one is a nice easy number.
