Bond cleavage is actually the breaking of bond in a compound

Bond cleavage could be of two types:-

1) homolytic cleavage: there is equal sharing of electrons between atoms/molecules

Eg. CH3-H --------> CH3• + H•

2) heterolytic cleavage: both electrons of the bond is taken by more electronegative atom/molecule resulting in formation of positive and negative charge

Eg. HCl--------> H+ + Cl-
