The Directory or Directorate (French: le Directoire) was a five-member committee which governed France from 1795, when it replaced the Committee of Public Safety. On 9 November 1799, it was overthrown by Napoleon Bonaparte in the Coup of 18 Brumaire and replaced by the French Consulate.

Answer⇒
The directory was a five member committee which governed France when the political power was passed into the hands of wealthier middle class.
Explanation:
The directory was meant as a safeguard against the concentration of power in hands of one-man executive as under the jacobins.
The directors often classes with the legislative councils who in turn sought to dismiss them. This led to political instability of directory in France. It paved the way for the rise of a military dictator called Napoleon Bonaparte.
