  • It typically refers to the place where the musical ideology originated.

Examples:-

some of the gharanas well known for singing khyals are: Agra, Gwalior, Indore, Jaipur, Kirana, and Patiala. Four famous Kathak Gharanas are - Lucknow, Jaipur, Banaras and Raigarh.
