This is one form of breaking a bond which results in the formation of ions. In a covalent bond the pair of electrons are shared between 2 atoms and in heterolytic fission this pair of electrons moves to one of the atoms. In an exam if they asked you to show the mechanism you would use a curly arrow to show the movement of a pair of electrons to one atom.

it is the process of cleaving a covalent bond where one previously bonded species takes both originally bonding electrons from the other species
