Homologous chromosomes are chromosomes pairs (one from each parent) that are similar in length, gene position, and centromere location. The position of the genes on each homologous chromosome is the same, however the genes may contain different alleles

The cell has two sets of eachchromosome; one of the pair is derived from the mother and the other from the father. The maternal and paternalchromosomes in a homologouspair have the same genes at the same loci, but possibly different alleles.
