According to kinetic theory of matter, matter whether in solid, liquid or gaseous form consists of small particles called molecules, atoms or ions. These particles are arranged such that they have spaces between them. These spaces are known as intermolecular spaces.

Intermolecular space is highest in gases, slightly lower in liquids ,and little (or no) in solids
