Lateral inversion" means the apparentreversal of the mirror image's left and right when compared with the object. "Lateral" just means "sideways". ... In a plane mirror, each point on the image is as far behind the mirror plane as the corresponding point on the object is in front.

When an object is placed in front of a plane mirror then the right side of the object appears as the left side of the image and vice-versa. The phenomenon of apparent change of right and left sides of an object by a plane mirror is called lateral inversion.
