Plant tissue is divided into two main types-:

• Meristematic tissues.
• Permanent tissues.

Let's know about Meristematic tissues-:

These tissues are formed of young tightly packed undifferentiated living cell which keep on dividing and new cells are created throughout the life of a plant.

This tissue is responsible for the growth of plants. This tissue is present in growing region's of plant, like in the root, in shoot and branches.

Characteristic of Meristematic tissues-:

• They are undifferentiated, small and have thin cell walls.

• They are compactly arranged and no intercellular spaces are found.

• Cells of this tissue can be on any shape, oval, spherical, polygonal, rectangular with cell walls made of cellulose.

• Cytoplasm is denge and vacuoles present are either small or absent.

• Nucleus of cells present is prominent and located in centre.

• The cells divide repeatedly throughout the life of plant.

=> There are three types of Meristematic tissues based on their location in plant body.

• Apical meristem - It is found in growing tips of stem, roots and growing leaves. It increases length of plant. It's also called primary meristem as it's responsible for primary growth of plant, it is responsible for growth and longing of roots and stem.

• Intercalary Meristem - Located on base of leaves and small twigs and at base of internodes. This is responsible for increase of length of branches and is responsible for bending ability of twigs.

• Lateral meristem - It is found as cambium on vascular bundles (Xylem and phloem) of dicot stem and root. Also, it's present as cork cambium under the bark of plant. This is responsible for increasing diameter, girth of plants. This meristem is also called as secondary meristem as it helps in secondary growth of plant.
