If you are or once were a teacher, you can probably remember being in the midst of a particular lesson and being certain that what you were doing was working. You just knew your students were learning what you were trying to teach them. Probably you can also remember a time when you sensed your instruction was bombing. Indeed, most teachers can arrive at reasonably accurate judgments about the quality of their instruction while it's taking place, as long as that instruction is extraordinarily good orextraordinarily bad. Of course, the vast majority of day-in and day-out instruction falls somewhere between those two extremes. Accordingly, in this chapter we'll be looking at more reliable ways that teachers can monitor their own instruction and its effectiveness in promoting student learning.
