Monoatomic: The elements that have only one atom are called monoatomic elements. They are stable.

Eg: Hydrogen

Diatomic: The elements that have two atoms are called as diatomic elements. The  the atoms that form diatomic elements do not like to be alone.

Eg: Oxygen

Triatomic: The elements that have three atoms are called as triatomic elements. They are unstable.

Eg: Ozone

Polyatomic: The elements that have more than two atoms bonded by a covalent bond are referred to as polyatomic elements.

Eg: Selenium.
