The term October heat refers to the post-monsoon, pre-winter rise in temperatures across the nation. During the southwest monsoon, most parts of India cool down due to precipitation (rainfall), increased moisture, cloud cover, and sea winds in coastal areas. However, as the monsoon withdraws, the temperature rises and humidity falls, giving rise to the phenomenon locally referred to as ‘October heat’.

However the term itself is a bit of a misnomer, since the rise in temperatures often extends to the first two weeks of November, after which the winter sets in.

Where is October heat felt?

October heat isn’t a Mumbai-specific phenomenon. It affects all of India, but the effects are most seen in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.

How does it begin?

October and November comprise a transition period for India. “The Sun starts moving southwards, and the low-pressure trough extending from Rajasthan to the northern Bay of Bengal makes way for a high pressure zone ,” says Dr. Ashwini Kulkarni, Scientist at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM).

The formation of the high pressure region is accompanied by the withdrawal of the monsoon and cloud cover. As a result, the skies get clearer and more of the sun’s heat reaches the ground. In addition, northeasterly winds bring hot air from northern region, which contribute to rising temperatures in southern parts.
