{ \boxed{ \mathtt{ \pink{Osmosis}}}}

Osmosis is a process by which the molecules of a solvent pass from a solution of low concentration to a solution of high concentration through a semi-permeable membrane.”

{ \bf{ \underline{Types}}}

Osmosis is of two types:

Endosmosis– When a substance is placed in a hypotonic solution, the solvent molecules move inside the cell and the cell becomes turgid or de-plasmolyzes. This is known as endosmosis.

Exosmosis– When a substance is placed in a hypertonic solution, the solvent molecules move outside the cell and the cell becomes flaccid or plasmolyzes. This is known as exosmosis.

{  \bf{ \underline{ Importance}}}

➸Osmosis influences the transport of nutrients and the release of metabolic waste products.

➸It is responsible for the absorption of water from the soil and conducting it to the upper parts of the plant through the xylem.

➸It stabilizes the internal environment of a living organism by maintaining the balance between water and intercellular fluid levels.

➸It maintains the turgidity of cells.

Osmosis :

Osmosis the process by which water moves through the selectively permeable cell membrane either in or out of the cell.

It is dependent on the concentration of the substances in water.

This process continues until the higher water concentration and lower water concentration reach equilibrium.

When the water moves out of the cell the cell shrinks . This is called exosmosis in animal cell and Plasmolysis in plant cell .

When the water moves into the cell the cell swells . This is called endosmosis (common term for both the type of cells).

Supplementary information :

  • Osmosis is a type of diffusion.

  • In biology diffusion means the movement of a substance from the region of higher concentration to lower concentration.

  • This movement is through the cell membrane which is semi permeable or selectively permeable. The meaning of being semi permeable or selectively permeable is it allows only specific matters to go in and out of the cell.

  • Oxygen and carbon dioxide pass in and out of the cell by the process of diffusion.

  • Water follows osmosis.
