The waxing gibbous phase occurs between the first quarter and full moon phases. A full moon is when we can see the entire lit portion of the Moon. The full moon phase occurs when the Moon is on the opposite side of the Earth from the Sun, called opposition. A lunar eclipse can only happen at full moon.

Phases of the moon.

Explanation:

The moon is Earth's satellite. It is composed of rocks and does not emit light on its own. It reflects the sun's light that falls onto its surface.

How much of the moon is visible on Earth at different points of times is classified as phases of the moon. The revolution of the moon around the earth causes these different phases

The moon goes through all its phases once every month. When the complete lit up side of the moon is visible from earth, the phase is called Full moon.

As the moon circles the earth, its lit up side becomes less and less visible and finally becomes invisible from earth and is known as dark moon or new moon.

The different phases of the moon are:

New Moon

Waxing Crescent

First Quarter

Waxing Gibbous

Full

Waning Gibbous

Third Quarter

Waning Crescent

Dark Moon
