The minerals settle out — they precipitate — and clog the pipes.

Examples :

  • BaCl₂ (aq) + Na₂SO₄ (aq) ➞ BaSO₄(s) white ppt. + 2NaCl (aq)

  • CuSO₄ (aq) + H₂S (g) ➞ CuS(s) black ppt. + H₂SO₄ (aq)

Precipitation is the formation of a solid (insoluble product),

  • either when two solutions are mixed,
  • or when a gas is bubbled into a solution.
