Representative democracyis a political system framed upon the appeal to populist ‘majoritive’ mandates to provide the requisite legitimacy to extort wealth from minorities - aka rich people, or anyone poorer than the minority.Representative democracy is not a principled system. The illusion of coherency tended to evaporate when the West adopted universal suffrage. Before that people were just ignorant or entrenched in mysticism. Today, they just want their entitlement and have an entrenched scepticism, not necessarily arising from their inability to know, but the prospects of democracy delivering anything useful. So we ‘principles’ have been supplanted with ‘coping skills’, as people attempt to fend off poverty in theemerging markets (actually matters are not that tragic), but mental illness in the West. It is amazing what is traumatising people. Asians must be rolling their eyes inwonder.
