If any system is enforced by laws and punishment then it will become hard and rigid in due course of time. That's what exactly happened in our Hindu social organization. Before manusmiriti we heard about lot of conversions from one varna to another with respect to one’s own choice & worth, but after manusmiriti people forced to retain their existing varna for ever due to the enforced laws.
