- The total number of digits in any number including the last digit whose value is uncertain is called significant numbers.
Rules for deciding significant figures:
- All non-zero digits are significant numbers. For example, in 0.768 there are three significant figures.
- Zeros located on the left of the first non-zero digit in the number are not significant. For example, 0.008 g has only one significant figure.
- Zeros present between the digits are considered as significant. For example, in the case of 3.06, there are three significant figures.
- Zeros to the right of the decimal points are significant. For example, in the case of 0.6000, there are four significant figures.
- Zero present at the end of the number may or may not be considered as significant figure.
