What do you mean by the statement rest and motion are relative terms give examples

Motion is relative.Whether you are in rest or motion, it depends upon the observer.A same thing is in motion for some observers, while in rest for others.It all depends on the frame of reference.I will give you a peculiar and quite easy example to understand:


Let's assume that you are currently sitting on a chair or on a couch.Now, for someone sitting/standing next to you,you are not moving,that is you are in rest.At the same time, if an alien is watching you from the space, he sees you moving as you are moving with the rotating earth,therefore he perceives that you are in motion.Now, think on this, you are doing nothing,just sitting still, yet your state of motion is a matter of argument!

And you are both at motion and at rest with respect to different observers.
