Short circuiting is a phenomenon due to which, when the live wire comes in contact with the neutral (due to poor insulation, or wearing of insulation), the wire is heated up (as heavy current is drawn) to such an extent that it may cause fire.

Short circuiting can be avoided by checking the insulation of circuits and using Miniature Circuit Breaker (MCB) in the circuit. When heavy current flows through the MCB, it shuts down the current flow and hence saves the appliances from getting damaged.
