Tripura crisis:

  • Within a few months of King Bir Bikram Kishore's premature death, Tripura confronted a major crisis with both internal and external risks. Queen Kanchanprabha Devi, president of the Regency Council, was under heavy pressure to join the Indian Union.
  • She disbanded the Council of Regency at the request of the Government of India and became the sole Regent on January 12, 1948.
  • She signed the 'Tripura Merger Agreement’ which took more than a year later, on September 9, 1949, and with effect from October 15, 1949, Tripura finally became part of the Indian Union. Basically, it was governed or known as a 'C' class government by the Chief Commissioner.
