The combining capacity of an element is called valency. This is equal to the number of electrons lost, gained or shared by one atom of the element during a chemical reaction.
valency of oxygen is -2 , valency of sodium is +1 . So when we write a compound name of sodium oxide. Do you know how it become Na2O . Because when valency sodium is +1 and valency of oxygen is -2. So when it react with each other it forms Na2O.
Valency of silicon is +4 and valency of chlorine is -1
