1. Carbon due to its property of catenation has the ability to form long chained compounds with other atoms giving rise to long chained compounds.

2. Carbon being tetravalent has the ability to combine with 4 other mono-valent atoms.

3. Carbon atoms are small and due to the new atoms (i.e. other atoms it has combined with) being very close to the nucleus, a strong bond is formed.

What do you mean by versatile nature of Carbon explain the two reasons responseble for this nature?

❶❭ Catenation

The linking of identical items together to form long chains.

Chain may be straight, branched & closed.

Ex: Silicon, Sulphur, oxygen & Phosphorus

❷❭ Tetravalency

The ability to link other atoms by four covalent bonds

Ex: Hydrogen & Chlorine

❸❭ Multiple Bonding

The ability to form double of triple bonds with itself or with other atoms.

Ex: Oxygen, Nitrogen & Sulphur
