In majority of flowering plants. out of four megaspore in a tetrad, only one megaspore becomes functional while other three degenerate. the only functional megaspore develops into female gametophyte (embryo sac). This method of embryo sac formation from a single megaspore is termed monosporic.

Female gametophyte is commonly called embryo sac or megagametophyte.

The ovary contains one or more ovules , which in turn contain one female gametophyte, also reffered to in angiosperms as the embryo sac.
