On heating, ferrous sulphate crystals lose water and ferrous sulphate is formed (FeSo4) ...... On further heating anhydrous ferrous sulphate decomposes to form ferric oxide, sulphar dioxide, and sulphur trioxide. So the gas emitted smell like burning sulphur.
