I think there are several false versions of Jesus many have come to believe in.
First, there is the cuddly liberal feelgood Hippie Jesus. This alleged person did not exist. The real Jesus preached against sin demanding repentance and was known to overturn tables and chase people with a whip. He was no milquetoast moral relativist pop psychology guru and while he did stop us from stoning adulterers, he quite intentionally did not make adultery any more morally acceptable than it was before.
Second, there is the Marxist revolutionary Jesus. This alleged person is a historical anachronism, and one that is particularly absurd in this case since Marxism is an unavoidably atheistic ideology.
Third, there is Hollywood Jesus. Hollywood Jesus is always depicted as having a sort of supernatural glow around him so that he's not quite human. The real Jesus could fall down in the mud just like anybody. He had to go to the bathroom every day. The Romans did not let crucifixion victims cover themselves with cloth. I'm not saying Hollywood Jesus is bad, or shouldn't be depicted: just that he shouldn't be confused for the real thing.
Fourth, we have Naturalistic Jesus. Naturalistic Jesus kind of existed somehow but didn't do the miracles and didn't actually say the stuff he said in the gospels. What is the point in believing in such a thing. None of his moral teachings were particularly unique. It has all been said both before and since. Without the miracles, and without his EXTREME claims about Himself, he's nothing particularly special. I see no point in Naturalistic Jesus: he didn't do much of anything.
The Real Jesus is not half man and half god like Hercules. He is completely man and completely God like no other character in history or fiction. He is the Way, the Truth and the Life, just like He said He was.
