What, do you think, is the initial error committed by the Slaters? How does it recoil on them?

The initial error committed by the Slaters was their greed and selfishness which did not let them act righteously and practically. They must have ensured Abel Merryweather's demise by having him examined from a doctor. They acted in haste to grab as many things as they could lay their hands on before the arrival of their rival inheritors. They should not have shown greediness as they were entitled to their share of Abel's property. Their folly recoiled on them as the grandfather was very furious when he understood the situation; he was angry at the Slaters for bringing his things downstairs. In his anger he snapped all ties with his daughters. He decided to marry Mrs John Shorrocks and have his will made again.
