The poet was neither a coward nor brave. This is because initially he felt honored to see the creature drinking water. There was a sense of humility in his behaviour but there was no fear. Again, later when he decided to kill the snake, it was because of his education and social awareness and not because of any kind of fear.

the poet is a coward person. in the starting of the poem, he allowed snake to drink water as he was afraid of it.
