because gold is a highly malleable metal and can be made very thin
the gold foil used by Rutherford in his experiment was only about 1000 atoms thick

this is a Rutherford model they explain atom have positive charge Alpha rays are positive charge using a gold foil because it's very thin sheet I think they help you
