The soil in which the mangrove trees grow have scarcity of oxygen. A plant needs oxygen to thrive which is not unknown to us. When the soil is not competent enough to support the underground root system with enough oxygen, the underground root system outgrows the aerial roots which grow vertically upwards and above the soil to collect oxygen. If the mangrove trees didn’t have those extra roots, those could not survive.
