What do you think would have happened if the backbone had only one long bone instead of man y vertebrae?

if backbone would have only one long bone than many vertebrae than we will not be wake to bend forward or backward. we will be straight like a wood and if we tried to bend then our backbone will break and put spinal cord will get damaged. we will not be able to move our neck forward or backward.
