- Caste movements refer to the rebellions of lower caste for the sole purpose of developing intolerance towards the existing caste system.
- Some of the most popular and backward caste movements are, Satya Shodhak Samaj, Justice Party, Shri Narayana Paripalana Yogam Movement, and The Self-respect Movement.
- The shodhak samaj was led by Jyotirao Phule who fought for the upliftment of his caste and several other lower castes.
- Yogam Movement was the initiative of Narayana Guru in Kerela. He belonged to a caste called Ezhava.
- His main aim was to eliminate untouchability and work for the betterment of his caste.
- Justice Party was the brainchild of C.N. Mudaliar and P. Thyagaraja Chetty. Founded in the year 1916, this party’s main aim was to ensure equal facilities to all the non-Brahmins of the country.
- Self-respect Movement was led by Ramaswamy Naiakar and its main aim was to eliminate the Brahmin Tyranny and work for the upliftment of the lives of Dravidians.
- Most of these movements were led by scholars and philosophers who wanted to put an end to the long-drawn hierarchy system which has been plaguing the Indian political system and resulting in dark patches like untouchability.
