These tournaments were based on religious communities. The quadrangular consisted of four(quadra) teams namely :
1. The Europeans
2. The parsis
3. The Hindus
4. The Muslims
Later this tournament had been transformed into pentangular as another community the rest was added to the communities making them five communities (penta).

hope it helps..

The Pentangular tournament was a cricket tournament that was organised on the basis of communally divisive competition.

The Pentangular tournament was earlier called the Quadrangular tournament because it involved four teams: the Europeans, the Parsis, the Hindus, and the Muslims.

The tournament was condemned because it was viewed as a competition aimed to divide India on the basis of religious lines. It was disadvantageous at the time because Indian nationalists were trying to unite the diverse communities and regions of India into one secular whole.
