In shifting cultivation , the people grow crops in a piece of land and after the soil becomes infertile. They burn the whole piece of land and move to another place ....and this goes on..It was mostly done by the tribal people

The tribals selected a patch of land and cleared it by cutting down the trees and burning them.Then they cultivated that land for some years.When the yield from the land decreased,they abandoned it and moved to a new area.

Such type of cultivation is called shifting cultivation.
