What do you understand by the term irrigation? How irrigation has affected and changed the cropping
pattern and social landscape of Indian society?

irrigation refers to the provision of water source through canals , underground water, river linking,etc.This has changed the cropping pattern in significant way. Rajasthan is the best example for this. With the Indira Gandhi canal bringing in water from Gujarat,the western part of Rajasthan which was earlier a desert now has plenty of water and farmers are growing a lot of crops.


While this is good , it has also brought problems . For instance, in Mehsana , Northern Gujarat, where water is found only at a depthpf 1500 feet, farmers are growing sugarcane which is a highly water intensive crop. And of course irrigation has made farmers quite rich thereby changing the social landscape of India society
