The tendency of a fluid, usually water, to pass through a semipermeable membrane into a solution where the solvent concentration is higher, thus equalizing the concentrations of materials on either side of the membrane. the diffusion of fluids through membranes or porous partitions.

The different types of osmosis include:

1) Endosmosis- when a substance is placed in a hypotonic solution, the solvent molecules move inside the cell and the cell becomes rigid.

2) Exosmosis-when a substance is placed in a hypertonic solution, the solvent molecules move out of the cell and the cell becomes flaccid.
