When Antonio asks Bassanio about the clandestine love he is harboring, he admits his love for Portia. Bassanio demands, though he already owes Antonio quite a lot, money to go to Belmont where Portia is. He intends to go there and woo her as a suitor.

Antonio expresses his inability to help him with money as all his money is blocked in his present venture and assures him that he can guarantee a loan that Bassanio takes from anyone. He wants him to go to Belmont and prove his love for Portia among other wealthy and powerful suitors.
