what does "as much as" means in maths' word problems?

Such as, Father weighed 5 times as much as his child.

You have a family. Of course in a family, father/ mother is heavier than the children.

Coming back to question :-

"Father weighed 5 times as much as his child."

Now, father cannot be equal to the weight of child, father is 5 times heavier than the child.

So,  the equation is :-

Father's weight = 5 * child's weight

5 times the child's weight equated with father's weight, as father is heavier than child.

"As much as" means one object being equal to another, means you need to add "=" sign in the equation at that particular moment.

Let us take another example :-

Alice's age is 9 times as much as her daughter Kay.

That means :-

Since Alice is Kay's mother, she is of course elder than her child. Alice can't be smaller than her daughter.

Alice's age = 9* Kay's age.

9 times equated with Kay's age which makes it equal to Alice's age.
