The author conveys the message in the story that the people who outsmart others can also be outsmarted. A person’s actions can often backfire on him and he can also be outsmarted.

"Mrs. Packletide was too jealous over Loon's achievement that made her go to the extent of hunting a tiger. She bribed the few villagers to arrange for a tiger that would be easier to hunt.
Finally, when she did shoot at the tiger, it was the "goat that died" from the gunshot and the "tiger died" because of heart failure. But she was not bothered about the "truth" but boasted that she killed the tiger and spread that message. She became famous than Loona.
Then Miss Mebin who knew her secret started blackmailing her for more money and Mrs. Packletide did not have any choice than to oblige to Miss Mebin's demands.
Finally, she had to pay for her own acts because of jealousy and greed."
