Burn. The reason the term "burn" is used is because the CD-writer, or burner, literally burns the data onto a writable CD. The laser in a CD-writer can be cranked up to a more powerful level than an ordinary CD-ROM laser. This enables it to engrave thousands of 1's and 0's onto a CD.

Almost everyone has heard the term "burn a CD." But what does it actually mean? To "burn" a CD simply means to copy or write information onto a compact disc, or CD. CD drives that are capable to writing CDs will use a laser to "burn" the information onto the underside of the CD and allow it to be read in CD players or CD-ROM drives.
