Valency means how many electrons a chemical species needs to complete duplet or octet rule. For example: Hydrogenatoms needs one more electron. So, their valency is 1. Helium'sduplet is naturally complete. It needs no electrons so, it'svalency is 0.

this is the duplet rule however there are element like lithium and hydrogen that do not reach eight electron in its outer most shell and hydrogen and lithium become stable by acquring the electronic configuration of the nearest inert gas that is helium this is duplet rule
