What does Julius Caesar mean by 'cowards die many times before their deaths'?

During the second act of Shakespeare's Julius Caesar,Caesar tells Calpurnia that ''Cowards die many times before their deaths;/The valiant never taste of death but once.'' ... He will face his tormentors and die a brave man, facing death rather than cowering from it.
