Because they’ve been living on an island, and he’s never told her; she has had no way of knowing. Also, no one’s told us. Act I, scene ii, is a whole lot of exposition. Like The Comedy of Errors at the opposite end of Shakespeare’s career, The Tempest has a first act that contains two scenes, one tautly constructed and dramatic, and one lengthy and expository. In both cases, Shakespeare is getting the backdrop out of the way so he can put all the parts in motion.
