it is the ghost who created and repairs the blood stain in order to frighten the Otis family that has come to live in the canterville chase.Mrs Otis is the first who catches sight of a dull red stain on the floor near the fire place.She asks Mrs umney,the housekeeper, to remove the stain at once.The old housekeeper tells her that it is the blood of Lady Eleanor de Canterville who had been murdered on that very spot by her own husband,Sir Simon de Canterville in 1575.So the blood stain can't be removed.
