The stamen of a flower — the part that produces pollen — consists of a slender stalk, called a filament and an anther. The filament supports the anther, which is where pollen develops. The word filament is from the Latin word filum, which means "thread."

The filament along with the anther form the stamen, which is the male reproductive part of a flower.

It is a thin thread like structure( like a stalk) that holds the anther,i.e. provides support to the anther and also carries the required nutrients to it.

The anther is the place for development of the pollen grains.
