Prothrombin is transformed into thrombin by a clotting factor known as factor X or prothrombinase; thrombin then acts to transform fibrinogen, also present in plasma, into fibrin, which, in combination with platelets from the blood, forms a clot (a process called coagulation).

Prothrombin is produced by the liver with the help of vitamin K, as an inactivated enzyme also known as proenzyme or zymogen, that gets converted into an active enzyme, thrombin during the clotting of blood.

During the process of clotting of blood or coagulation of blood, prothrombin( inactive form) gets converted into thrombin( the active form) in the presence of a clotting factor, prothrombinase or Factor X .

This active enzyme, thrombin converts fibrinogen( present in plasma of blood) to fibrin, and along with the help of platelets in blood result in the formation of a clot.
